Both are techniques for creating raised or recessed designs on paper or notebook covers, but they do the opposite visually:

1. Embossing

The design is raised above the surface with the material being pushed from underneath so the logo, text, or pattern stands out creating a tactile, 3D effect that you can feel with your fingers. Often used for a subtle, elegant look, especially on plain covers.

2. Debossing

The design is pressed into the surface, creating an indented impression with the logo or text sitting below the surrounding surface. Debossing results in a sophisticated, understated effect that works well with foil stamping to add metallic highlights.

Moleskin and Moleskine are often confused because of their similar names, but they are distinct brands with different histories and products.

Moleskin
